Brixton Central

The Brixton Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) sets out an area called Brixton Central (see map) as a major area for growth and investment in the town centre. We now want local people to help set out proposals for the long-term future of this part of the town centre.

The two major landowners in the area, Lambeth Council and Network Rail, have jointly appointed AECOM and Fluid Architects to work with local people on a masterplan development brief for Brixton Central. This will be used to establish in more detail the type of development and public space in the area, its scale and how it should be delivered.

The first stage of this work will be to set up a local reference group that will help us to involve the whole community in the discussion later in 2014. Members of the Fluid team will be speaking to and meeting with key Brixton based groups and individuals they hope will join this group. If you are interested in finding out more about joining the reference group, please get in touch via the Future Brixton email address.

Working closely with the Brixton Rec User Group (BRUG), the council is commissioning additional survey and capacity work for Brixton Rec, to understand the nature and scale of improvements needed. This will include looking at how the building could be further modernised to meet future leisure demand in the area, as well as the potential to improve its energy efficiency. The findings from this work will be consulted on in the summer/autumn of 2014.

Wider engagement with local people will take place in the summer, with the study finishing in the autumn of 2014.

  1. I could not make the meeting as it clashed with another.

I was involved in the campaign to save the market Car Park. The original planning decision for Streatham had been that the old rink would remain open until the new one was finished. Tescos then demanded that the Ice rink be moved off site.

The Council took away the Car park that serves the market for the convenience of Tescos. As was pointed out Tescos did not lose there car park in Acre Lane.

To cut a long story short we were promised by Council that once the temporary ice rink was no longer required the site would be cleared as a ground level car park for market area shoppers. Until the site was needed for permanent redevelopment.

The Council look to me like they are going back on that promise. Only offering 22 car parking spaces for whole market area.

The Council should use the site for a car parking for market as promised.

Also the lack of parking is damaging retail shopping. Does the Council want the whole market to be eateries? Without parking the retail shops are at a disadvantage to supermarkets like Tesco in Acre Lane.

Due to lack of parking Electric lane is blocked in a dangerous fashion with cars.

  2. Brixton and shoppers need a decent sized car park. With the removal of the temporary skating rink, this is a unique opportunity to reinstate a car park. The old structure never should have been removed.

  4. Lambeth has very low levels of car ownership. In fact I barely know anyone who has a car. I realise there are some people that do drive and think it’s fair to provide some parking spaces, but not at great expense when there are so many better ways to use the space, e.g. for projects that could create jobs and enterprise opportunities for local young people.
