We are thinking about how we can improve Brixton’s town centre streets and open spaces over the next 10 years. We’ve held workshops with local residents and businesses and come up with some proposals. You can read about them in the Public Realm Report and let us know what you think through the questionnaire.
Please note the deadline to feed back is Monday 14 July.
It’s still early days as we have not yet secured any funding but we think it’s important that everyone has the chance to play a role in the project from start to finish.
Why make any changes?
The streets of Brixton add to the character of the town centre; they are home to its markets and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The design of a street affects people – whether visitors want to explore its shops and attractions, or whether cyclists and pedestrians use it; many of the streets in Brixton town centre do not encourage these things.
Which streets are we looking at?
- Atlantic Road
- Pope’s Road/Brixton Station Road
- Coldharbour Lane
- Electric Avenue
- Area in front of Brixton Police Station
- St Matthew’s Peace Gardens
- Acre Lane east
- Brighton Terrace
- Somerleyton Passage/Somerleyton Road
What stage are we at?
We kick started the project
last autumn by appointing a team of landscape architects and transport engineers. They held two public workshops to ask locals to think about the following questions.
Can Brixton’s streets and public places be more attractive? More sociable? Better for children, walking or cycling? Good for business? Whilst maintaining Brixton’s unique character?
You can read a summary of what was discussed here. We used the feedback from the workshops to put together the Brixton Public Realm Strategy. We are now asking for your feedback on the strategy.
Have your say
Please have a look through the Brixton Public Realm Report and give us your views by completing this questionnaire.
You don’t have to respond to all the questions. Just look through and answer the ones that seem relevant to you. There’s plenty of space to just jot down your own thoughts. The deadline for responses is Monday 14 July.
Once we have analysed the feedback we plan to select one or two projects to take forward to the next stage.

I think that some thought should go into making the Central Brixton part of Coldharbour Lane and Atlantic Road one-way with some form of traffic calming. Too much traffic and cars going too fast. More should be done to encourage outdoor seating space, cafés etc.

I agree with Dan. And where/how can I find out more about the various ideas knocking about on the rail interchange, and the possibility of a new London overground station?
