On Tuesday 3 March, the Mayor announced recipients of up to £9 million through his High Street Fund. It is the first time the Mayor of a major European city has used a civic crowdfunding website to directly pledge money for community projects. Funding is being directed to places that have potential for growth and where there is the commitment and capacity for real long-term change.

It was announced that Brixton has received £869,000 for wayfinding improvements, public wi-fi, the world’s first local currency cash machine, and a new workspace in the town centre will help support existing high street businesses, as well as creating new workspace for young entrepreneurs.

Cllr Jack Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Jobs and Growth, said: “We welcome the announcement from City Hall that Brixton has been awarded £869k from the Mayor’s High Street Fund.

Brixton is already a bustling, busy and diverse place. The bid, successfully put together by the Council, in partnership with local organisations, including the Brixton Market Traders Federation, the Brixton BID and the Brixton £, looks to further stimulate local economic activity for the benefit of all our residents.

The money will be used to support our street market traders, significantly improve the public realm along Electric Avenue, enhance the shopping and visitor experience, create space for local enterprise, and support the Brixton £ by providing funds for its very own cash machine.

We will be finalising the full range of projects in the coming weeks, so expect more announcements in the near future”.
