Over the last few weeks we’ve been talking to shoppers, residents, retailers and others, to find out what works well and what could work better in the street markets. This has helped our architects, Gort Scott, to come up with some design options for physical improvements to Electric Avenue, Pope’s Road and Station Road.

We met with local residents to understand the issues that concern them, from noise, vehicle access and rubbish to the market’s opening hours.  On 10th June we attended the Brixton Market Traders Federation annual AGM – the third in a series of conversations with the traders who work in the market streets and contribute so much to what makes the markets and Brixton town centre a unique and vibrant place.  They gave constructive feedback and practical advice on pitch sizes, stall locations and infrastructure needs, amongst other things.

We are now digesting what people have told us, and starting next week we will begin to consult on our strategy and design consultants initial thoughts about how we can use the £1.25m we have to invest in improving Brixton’s street markets to be best effect, to improve the markets function, look, feel and usability for everyone who shops, visits, lives or works in or around Brixton’s street markets.

We’d now like to know what you think of these designs and invite you to a consultation workshop for market traders and local shop retailers on:

  • Wednesday, 24 June, 4.30 to 6.30pm, Room 125, Brixton Town Hall. Book here

If you can’t join us at this time there are a number of other consultation events which are open to all:

  • Tuesday, 23 June, 6.30 to 8pm, consultation workshop in Room 8, Lambeth Town Hall. Book here
  • Saturday 27 June, 11 to 3pm market stall, Station Road
  • Tuesday, 23 June, 2 to 5pm, market stall, Electric Avenue

We hope you’ll join us and we look forward to hearing your thoughts.
