The Somerleyton Road project is a unique partnership between Lambeth Council, Brixton Green and Ovalhouse and a new way of building and managing homes, community facilities, a theatre and more.

All the partners want to understand whether this project ultimately achieves what they and the local community have set out to do. And it’s important for the council to learn what works (or doesn’t work so well) for any future developments.

Social Life has been brought in to carry out some independent research to look at these issues. Social Life’s aim is to find out what impact the scheme has on the people living around Somerleyton Road; and whether this new way of working is successful. They will be carrying out their first research over the next few months and repeating it in three years time.

Nicola Bacon from Social Life explains:

“Our research needs to be carried out in two phases. The first will look at how people feel about the area and the project now and the second will ask the same questions once the development is complete in about three years’ time.

Over the next few months

There are three activities taking place over the next few months:

  • Social Life has already started talking directly to residents, traders, and local organisations
  • Other Brixton residents can let us have their views using an online tool called Commonplace –  https://somerleyton.commonplace.is/
  • We will also oversee a survey of residents living within a 200m radius of the centre of Somerleyton Road.

The questions we’re asking aim to find out:

1)      What you feel about the area immediately around Somerleyton Road

2)      What you think about the Somerleyton Road project

The first stage of the work will set the benchmark for the project, and what comes out of it will be very useful for the project partners and igloo the development manager. It will help them develop their plans to meet the needs of people living near the site, and also help them understand how more local people can become involved in the project.

After the development is complete

Repeating the research in three years’ time will allow us to see what impact the development has had over time, and how attitudes towards the area and towards the development have changed.  Our findings will be published for everyone to read.”
