Raw Talent and Brixton£ have teamed up to run a series of business workshops for 14 – 15 year olds from Elm Green School. The five day programme will be held at Pop Brixton from 8 – 12 February. Founder of Raw Talent, Abigail Melville, told us more about the project.
Raw Talent has worked with The Elmgreen School to identify students from deprived backgrounds who will most benefit from this opportunity. Students will be challenged to apply their creative thinking to real life challenges. At the start of the week their mentor will set a business project which they will complete during the week. On Friday all the students will come together to present their projects back to their mentors.
On the first day students will learn about Pop Brixton in the context of Brixton’s wider economy. They will be assigned a mentor and work with them in their business. From Tuesday to Thursday students will attend half-day sessions learning skills in different businesses and also attend master classes on key issues (such as building personal networks or how to start a business) led by Pop Brixton experts.
Pop is home to a wide range of creative and social businesses, including music PR, housing recruitment, architects, clothes makers, furniture restorers, photographers, music producers, a vinyl record shop, skateboarding, restaurants, street food, an event space, the Impact Hub (where we are based), the Brixton Improvement District and Reprezent Radio.
Raw Talent prepares the students by meeting each individually to assess their skills and interests and running four hour-long preparation workshops to explore career opportunities in London and the current labour market and work on developing the work related capabilities employers are looking for.
Raw Talent will run a post-placement celebration to review what the students have learnt from their experience and what feedback they have received from their mentors. Raw Talent will also work with students to help plan the next stage of their career journey.
This is part of the community give back scheme that all businesses in Pop Brixton sign up to. Businesses can participate in three different ways:
- Host business: a student will spend half a day in your business focussed on one business task which you have prepared for them.
- Mentor: you will be assigned a student at start of the week and set them a small research project that will benefit your business. You will then meet them halfway through the week to catch up, and finally again at the end of the week.
- Masterclass: you will deliver a 30 minute presentation followed by a Q&A on a business topic based on your experience. This might include how you set up your business, or something relating to other work you have done.
If you are interested in taking part in this scheme, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
